What is the Food Eco District (FED)?
FED is a 2 by 4 block district in the heart of downtown Victoria that is becoming the first sustainable dining district in Canada. We have 14 restaurant and café members, all focused on eco-friendly practices, and a growing number of edible gardens around town. We are also in partnership with LifeCycles Project Society to create an Urban Learning Garden in the courtyard of the downtown library where anybody will be able to learn more about growing in urban spaces.

It is our goal to create a district as distinct as China town, but all about food and sustainability.

FED's Mission

fed's role
fed's role
The Food Eco District’s role is to inspire food-focused communities and ecosystems by connecting people to the food they eat, while also encouraging compelling solutions to increase climate action on Vancouver Island.

We are highly collaborative and believe we can accomplish more together than alone. We build great spaces to be used as educational hubs for food security and sustainability. We support and partner with other organizations where our missions align, and believe in the power of small business and advocacy to drive the change we need to see in the world.
To increase food awareness and community engagement by creating a vibrant downtown district that fosters green spaces and showcases sustainable restaurants.

services
FED provides consultation on creating and maintaining multiple types of edible gardens, converts under-utilized urban areas into green spaces and works alongside restaurants, developers and local government to increase Victoria's capacity for urban agriculture and food security. verification process

accountability
The Food Eco District and the Synergy Sustainability Institute both have their own Board of Directors, and are accountable to the Province of BC under the Society Act for provincial non-profit societies.
It is key for a green business certification to be verified by a third party for accountability, transparency and credibility.
Each FED member receives a Vancouver Island Green Business Collective (VIGBC) seal of certification by a verifier contracted and trained by Synergy Sustainability Institute (SSI). Verifiers will conduct a site visit to assess the company's operations and interview key staff. This personalized, yet objective, approach allows verifiers to make specific recommendations and help establishments reach a higher level of green certification.
The Food Eco District (FED) is hosted by Synergy Sustainability Institute (SSI), a non-profit organization located in Victoria, BC. FED has received support from the following organizations to bring you the first sustainable dining district in Canada. THANK YOU to our many amazing sponsors!
